One of my most favorite things to do is arrange flowers. I’m not a professional by any means though I have learned a few tips and tricks along the way. If you have a Trader Joe’s nearby, they’ve been so great for me whenever I’ve had events and they’ll even pre-order flowers for you. I also love Dollar Hydrangea and Fifty Flowers that deliver right to your door. Especially when I’m doing arrangements in non-traditional containers I like to use wet flower foam to create a solid base and keep the arrangement fresh. You can order some here. One of my favorite parts about flower arranging is finding unique containers to compliment the blooms or the occasion. I rounded up some of my favorite unexpected items to consider using the next time you do an arrangement of your own.
- Ice Buckets – Vintage or otherwise these are often the perfect containers for a show stopping arrangement and they’re already water tight!
- Baskets – Whenever I use a basket I either insert a container that is a little bit smaller inside or I use a plastic baggie full of water with a rubber band tied around it.
- Tureens – Take a beautiful tureen and add some blooms for unique twist!
- Pitchers – Not just for water an iced tea, pitchers have long served double duty for pretty flowers.
- Trashcans – Okay here me out! Not all trashcans are created equal and some are so pretty and interested, especially the vintage variety. Put a bunch of hydrangeas in there and voila!
- Trophies – When we were getting married I collected a bunch of silver from our local Goodwill and Salvation Army for our centerpieces and one of them was a beautiful engraved trophy that has been used for flowers time and time again, including on our special day.
- Cups – Some cups are the sweetest, daintiest little arrangements for flowers. Especially if you’re thrifting and find a lone cup that is too pretty to pass up, take her home and put your favorite flowers in there!
- Toothbrush Holders – There are some really pretty ones out there and they’re the perfect size for a bedside arrangement! Especially the vintage variety, just a quick search for vintage toothbrush cups will yield some of the cutest little options that could have a great second act as a vase!
- Boots – So this is a very theme specific option but can be so cute! When Curtis was moving from Pennsylvania to Dallas after he graduated from college, my friend and I planned a Welcome To Texas bash and figured some wildflowers in a boot were a good look for that! This is another case of putting the flowers in a smaller vase that you nestle into whatever non-traditional container you’re using.
- Utensil Crock – Maybe the utensil crock holding your spatula and can opener is the perfect container for your next flower arrangement! I see a lot of really cool crocks at thrift stores that are perfect for some pretty blooms!
The opportunities for creativity are limitless and what I love is that they’re most likely right under your nose and in your own home! I’m going to keep up the hunt for fun and unexpected containers and I hope you will too!
